How long does the training usually take?
A student´s training timeline depends both on the student´s own progress and the training track the student selects. The standard track for our Private Pilot program is designed to take 12-14 month for students with availability 2-3 days per week.
Please note, that these estimates can vary depending on how often you fly, resource availability, and weather.
What does a typical schedule look like?
This really depends on you. Our students have one-on-one ground with their instructor 1-2 times per week. As for your flights, if you are a full-time student, you will be scheduled 3-4 flights per week so you can make efficient progress through the course, and still stay on track even when flights are cancelled for weather or maintenance.
If you are a part time student, you will be scheduled 1-2 times a week depending on your availability and commitment.
Are there scholarships available?
Pine Tree Helicopters does not currently offer any scholarships, but there are several aviation organizations that offer scholarships for portions of the training. When we are made aware of these opportunities, we share them on our social channels, so be sure to follow us!
How often should I fly?
For the standard track for our private pilot program, we recommend being scheduled for 2-3 flight activities per week. This puts you on a good track to complete the training in a timely manner, even if you have to cancel some flights for maintenance issues or weather.
Can I pay as I go?
Yes! Pine Tree Helicopter’s payment plan is structured to allow you to pay as you go.
Is financing available?
Yes, we have financing partners that can offer coverage for students who qualify. Feel free to reach out to us for more information about financing options and our partners.
How soon can I begin training?

Is it necessary to learn to fly an airplane before learning to fly a helicopter?
No, helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes are very different types of aircraft when it comes to aerodynamics and operating procedures. Any knowledge about one is not a prerequisite to fly the other. We think helicopters are much more fun!
What flight certificates do I need to be employable?
The bare minimum you will need to be employable is a Commercial Pilot rating and a Second-Class Medical Certificate, but your chances of finding a job are greatly enhanced if you also have Instrument and Flight Instructor Certificates. We offer training for all!
Is there an age limit for certified helicopter pilots?
Many students begin their training when they are in high school, however a new pilot must be at least 17 years old to take the first check ride required for a Private Pilot license and be 18 years old to qualify for a Commercial Pilot license.
On the other end of the spectrum, the factor that determines when it’s time to retire is health. Many pilots stop flying when they no longer meet the health requirements to maintain their flight privileges. Otherwise, age is no factor, the best time to start is now!
What type of job opportunities are there for helicopter pilots?
The use of helicopters is expanding into many new markets. Just a few of the fields include fligh instructor, life flight, offshore transportation, tourism, law enforcement, firefighting, border patrol, VIP/corporate travel, and construction.
Is there any benefit in the job marketplace to have flight certificates and a college degree in aviation?
Yes. The qualifications for some senior positions in the aviation industry do require a college degree; however, this is not a requirement for a majority of the helicopter pilot careers currently out there.
Are helicopters more restricted by high winds or bad weather?
No, helicopters’ inherent agility allows for safe maneuvering and landing in poor weather. In fact, helicopters are permitted to fly in lower weather conditions than airplanes.
